Dr. Mark Hayman's courses.
The course will examine the origins and trajectory of the oil industry in the Middle East from the beginning of the twentieth century until the present day. It will focus upon the political and commercial aspects of the development of the industry, and will explore the relationships between companies, host governments, the major industrial powers. Despite maintaining a regional focus, the course will relate developments in the Middle East to the world oil scene.
This is a survey course which examines the presence of western powers in the Middle East from the time of the Crusades until the Suez war of 1956. It seeks to explain the reasons behind that presence (political, religious, military and economic), and to consider the effects of that presence upon the region and upon East-West relations.
This course examines the major social, political and economic developments which have occurred in what today is known as the United Arab Emirates, from about 1800 until the present day. In the earlier part, particular attention will be given to the nature and consequences of the relationship with Britain, and in the later period to the role which oil wealth and the oil industry played in the transformation of local society.
